About Peterborough Younger Walkers

About Peterborough Younger Walkers

We are a friendly bunch of people in our 20s, 30s and 40s from in and around Peterborough who enjoy walking and generally having a bit of fun.

The Ramblers Association started setting up groups specifically aimed at people in the 20s and 30s age group a few years ago.  Two members of the  Peterborough Ramblers (main) Group thought groups aimed at younger people were a good idea and put out an advertisement for a new group specifically aimed at younger people in January 2001.

Following the advertisement we started up as a very small group.  We were originally called Peterborough 20s and 30s Walking Group, but changed our name to Peterborough Younger Walkers in 2003.  We are a friendly group with around 50-60 members.  We organise a variety of walks, social events and weekends away.  We always try to make newcomers feel welcome.

Our Walks

The majority of are walks are within 30 minutes drive of Peterborough, although we do sometimes have some walks further a field.  Our members tend to live in Peterborough, Oundle, Stamford, Deeping, Elton, Bainton, Northborough, Wisbech, Eye, Thorney, Sawtry and the surrounding area.  We tend to travel to walks through car sharing with other members who live nearby.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Peterborough Younger Walkers like?

We are a friendly bunch and welcome people with all levels of experience, beginners are particularly welcome. We have about 50-60 members. On average we get about 10-20 people on a walk; sometimes we only have 10 people sometimes 30 it varies from walk to walk. We also have social events such as trips to the cinema, theatre, 10 pin bowling, and meals out etc.  We also have our monthly pub meeting, which is held in various pubs around the area.  If you are interested in walking, or think you would like to try it, would like to meet new people who share the same interest and enjoy being sociable, we may well be the group for you.  It's a great way to make new friends and get to know the local countryside.  There is no pressure to attend any of our walks or social events, members attend events as often or as little as they like.  Please don't just judge us by the description above, come on a walk and see for yourself!

So what should you do if I want to come on a walk?

You are welcome to just turn up for a walk on the programme (but turn up on time as leaders may not wait long for latecomers).  It's advisable to telephone the walk leader in advance and let them know you are coming, then they will look out for you.  Dogs are allowed on walks at the walk leaders discretion only, so please telephone the Walk Leader if you want to bring a dog to ask if the walk is suitable.  As some walks involve climbing a number or styles or walking though fields containing livestock.

Figure of 8 walks are in two parts, a morning part and afternoon part with lunch in between.  You can come on all of the walk, or just for the morning walk, or just for the afternoon walk.  Both walks tend to have the same start point or a start point near each other, so people can meet up and socialise for lunch after the morning walk and before the afternoon walk.

What equipment do I need?

We advise you to bring suitable walking or other strong boots to walk in, as it can be wet and muddy.  We usually bring our own packed lunches for day walks and figure of 8 walks.  We usually stop at a pub or teashop if there is one on route for refreshments so it is advisable to bring some money with you for drinks etc.  We recommend you also bring a bottled soft drink, or flask of coffee/tea with you to drink on the way.

Do I have to join?

As we are a Ramblers Association Group people join by joining of the Rambler's Association and registering with our group. We don't expect people to join on their first walk, though we will probably give you some information, we normally* allow people to come on 3-4 walks to decide whether they want to join or not (*the exception being weekends away).  If after 3 or 4 walks you decide you like walking with us, and want to come on more walks we will ask you to join the Rambler's Association.

When people join the Rambler’s Association they are automatically registered with the nearest group to their home address, this will not necessarily be our group. So if you would like to be registered with us you should specify this on your membership form by quoting code "CB6".  If you do end up registered with the wrong group we can get it changed but it will take a few weeks to do.

Once you have joined the Rambler's Association you are free to go on walks held by different groups around the country, details of which can be found on the Ramblers Association's main websitewww.ramblers.org.uk

Membership is currently only £24 a year for individuals, or £32 for a couple/family (at the same address).

Membership entitles you to: a yearbook worth £5.99, quarterly glossy magazine, another quarterly Hike magazine aimed at members in the 20s and 30s age group, a booklet containing details of all the walks the other Rambler's Association Groups in Cambridgeshire are organising, a membership card which gives you 10% discount at most outdoor shops and insurance if you want to lead a walk.  Which is excellent value for money.  Almost all our walks are free and the exceptions will be listed in our programme.

How can I get to walks if I haven't got a car?

If you live in an area where some of our members live someone may be able to give you a lift to the start of walks.  Please contact the appropriate walk leader listed on the programme if you would like a lift.

Interested?

We are aware that it may be a bit nerve racking coming on a walk for the first time. Many of us felt the same the first time we came along. So we try to make new people feel welcome. Please don’t put it off coming on a walk with us, we often have more than one person on a walk who hasn’t walked with us before, so you probably won’t be alone.
